Traveler’s insurance is a type of insurance for when you travel. It’s specifically to cover injuries and losses when you travel. You may use it for domestic or international travel. While insurance companies position it as a necessity for people who liked to travel, is it really necessary? Or are they just trying to make a buck off of you?
At Beach Boys Cabanas, we’re a Holden Beach, Sunset Beach, and Ocean Isle Beach equipment rental company, offering cabanas, umbrellas, grills, and more. But we’re also experts
in travel! And since we don’t have any affiliation with insurance, who better to give you advice about traveler’s insurance?
General Information
Travel insurance serves the purpose of covering the costs associated with something that ruins your trip, which could include injury, accidents, transportation delays, illness, or a missed flight, among other issues.
You may for this insurance on an as-needed basis. For instance, you only pay for the insurance before you’re going on a trip. You don’t need to have an ongoing policy. And you don’t have to have it for every trip you plan to go on, so you can pick and choose when you find it necessary.
Cost
In general, you tend to pay between four and 10 percent of the total cost of your trip. So let’s say you’re planning to take a $10,000 trip. The insurance for that particular vacation will cost you between $400 to $1,000.
Factors that affect your cost include the destination, your age, the specifics of the coverage, and the number of travelers. For instance, if you customize the policy because you’re an athlete and are traveling for business, this may increase the premium you pay for the trip.
You may purchase this insurance online or in person. It’s offered by private insurance companies, airlines and other travel suppliers, and travel agents.
Always make sure you read the fine print of the policy. Some policies may have limitations as to how much you claim, or there might be specifications of what’s covered and for what purpose.
For instance, let’s say you booked a trip last year and find yourself eight months pregnant by the time the trip comes. You’ve been deemed as high risk and therefore aren’t going to risk it and fly. The trip insurance may not cover the cost.
Who Needs It
Not every person needs trip insurance, nor does a person need it for every trip they go on. Generally, you want to consider it if you may not be able to cancel and rebook the trip, and it’s expensive or a long trip.
You might want to have traveler’s insurance if you’re going on an international trip since it can cover healthcare expenses, and your standard health insurance policy might not cover out-of-the-country expenses.
This may also be beneficial if you have stringent bookings that don’t let you change your plans last minute or at all.
If your trip is short or inexpensive or you can’t afford the insurance, your best bet is to look into hotels or car rentals that let you pay upon arrival rather than pay beforehand. Look for ones that offer flexible cancellation terms, such as you can change your trip up to 24 hours before the date or even on the date. Look for options that let you rebook without having to pay a fee.
Beach Boys Cabanas, serving Holden Beach, Ocean Isle Beach, and Sunset Beach, wants your trip to be as memorable as possible and for all the right reasons, not because you can cancel it last minute and spent a fortune to rebook for a later date.
